EXPERTUM TECH ALERT- SAP's support backbone is the central infrastructure located at SAP to provide technical support to our customers. The support backbone consists of several different systems for different purposes - for example, it provides the SAP Support Portal infrastructure (support.sap.com), the Maintenance Planner, SAP EarlyWatch Alert Reports, and many more.

Until the end of 2019, the legacy infrastructure will remain operational allowing customers with older Solution Manager versions to use these support services. However, as of January 1st, 2020, the ability to connect to the SAP Support Backbone will become mandatory.
The ability of SAP Solution Manager to exchange data with the SAP Support Backbone is available as of Solution Manager 7.2 SPS 07 (at the time of writing, the highest available support package level is SPS 08). All systems running on an earlier version or support package level must therefore be updated to 7.2 SPS 07 or higher between now and the end of 2019. This means specifically:
- If you are on Solution Manager 7.2 with support package level <= SPS 06: you must update the system to SPS 07 (manual activities required) or SPS 08 (automation available).
- If you are on Solution Manager 7.1: you must upgrade the system to Solution Manager 7.2 SPS 08
