HANA Crash and data corruption caused by Linux Bug

 08-Jun-2016 16:49:00 by Mark Mergaerts

SAP has published Hot News note 2246163 describing a serious issue whereby SAP HANA crashes and a recovery from the latest backup is necessary. This is not a bug in SAP HANA (which means that every version of HANA can be affected); the cause is a bug in the underlying XFS file system management code. The crash can only occur with SUSE SLES 11. SUSE has provided fixes for SLES 11 SP 3 and SLES 11 SP 4. Instructions on how to apply the fix is available in the following SAP notes:

For SLES 11 SP 3: Note 1954788
For SLES 11 SP 4: Note 2240716
See the paragraph “Patch for XFS lost write in last block” near the end of the note text; in both cases, an upgrade of the SUSE kernel is necessary (a link to the correct download location is provided in the notes).

It is not possible to repair the damage to the data block; a roll-forward recovery from the latest backup is the only solution to restore the integrity of the database.
